The Assistant Controller supports the Controller with responsibilities for managing day-to-day accounting functions, month-end close activities, internal and external reporting, and annual audits. In addition to being an individual contributor, the Assistant Controller will be a supervisory position, responsible for offering leadership and direction to assigned accounting staff.

Essential Job Functions

  • Day-to-day accounting operations including general ledger, A/R, taxes and fixed assets
  • Create, maintain and ensure the accuracy of capitalization tables and debt schedules between the Company’s various entities, Members and Limited Partner investors
  • Assist the Controller in managing the monthly accounting close process including journal entry review, account reconciliations and variance analysis to deliver complete, accurate and timely financial reporting
  • Research and document technical accounting issues and implement new accounting pronouncements
  • Implement and maintain accounting policies and procedures to ensure the highest level of efficiency and customer service while maintaining appropriate internal controls and compliance with GAAP
  • Review various contracts and leases to ensure proper accounting treatment
  • Coordinate successful audits with external auditors
  • Provide supporting documentation for company tax returns
  • Provide accounting support for corporate and operations functions
  • Ad hoc reports, analysis and reporting
  • Drive process improvement and efficiency in all accounting and close functions including ERP enhancements
  • Manage one or more staff accountants and responsible for developing and mentoring accounting staff including training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems

Education and Experience

  • CPA with 3 to 5 years public accounting audit experience, Big 4 preferred
  • Bachelors degree in Accounting
  • 7+ years experience in progressively responsible accounting roles in both public accounting and a corporate accounting department; ideally experience in the grocery, retail or restaurant industry
  • 2 to 3 years of proven leadership experience with direct supervision of staff and the ability to motivate a team to produce quality materials within tight deadlines and simultaneously manage multiple projects.
  • Experienced in implementing/maintaining internal controls
  • Experienced with top-tier ERP systems, Great Plains a plus

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Professional written and verbal communication skills as well as strong interpersonal and customer service skills
  • Ability to participate in and facilitate meetings
  • Technical Accounting knowledge/proficiency: solid understanding of GAAP and experience in researching technical accounting issues
