Associate Buyer for Consumables

General Overview:

The Associate Buyer develops the merchandise assortments that drive sales by focusing on product selection, product development, department trends and international sourcing.  They collaborate closely with the Senior Buyer, Inventory Management, Visual Merchandising, Store Operations and the Distribution Centers.  The Associate Buyer is responsible for the professional development of an Assistant Buyer.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and acquire merchandise through foreign and domestic travel
  • Achieve or exceed department sales, margin and turnover objectives
  • Ability to identify trends and interpret for CPWM consumers
  • Maximize growth opportunities by expanding, adding and developing merchandise categories
  • Present product vision and category to members of Senior Management
  • Strategic planning following the retail merchandising calendar
  • Manage vendor and agents to ensure the best possible pricing
  • Identify trends and maximize growth opportunities
  • Determine advertising proposals and projections for multi media and in store promotions
  • Partner with Visual Merchandising on schematic guidelines
  • Collaborate with the Planning and Distribution team on financial projections, including sales and markdowns
  • Maintain communication with the stores
  • Manage the professional development of an Assistant Buyer

Job Requirements:

  • BA or BS degree required
  • Minimum 3 -5 years in an Associate Buyer or Buyer position with a multi unit retailer
  • Excellent planning and negotiation skills
  • Ability to identify, develop and manage existing business and spot future trends
  • Creative problem solving and risk taking skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent analytical skills; trend forecasting and item management
  • Experience with Merchandising software systems; AS400, Brio
  • Strong PC skills including Microsoft Excel and Windows
  • Strong leadership and team collaboration skills
  • Proven ability to develop subordinates
