The Associate Director, External Communications will be dedicated to managing issues and developing and driving reactive and proactive reputation/community plans for UnitedHealthcare Community & State while managing daily activities in a territory; socializing UHC and Community & State value stories with key local stakeholders; and localizing and implementing business-segment and functional communications initiatives and programs.   


The Associate Director will lead member issues and business unit issues and crisis, with support as requested. This includes managing urgent reactive media inquiries, working with high-level executives and colleague from the enterprise level. The position will collaborate closely with local government affairs, social responsibility, medical directors and other functional team members, and play an important role in building, protecting and strengthening the credibility of the company and business unit among various external stakeholders.  Key to this is an individual with strong capabilities in strategic communications, and brand and reputation building. This position is responsible for building relationships with traditional and new media, local influencers, business partners and community organizations to increase awareness and understanding of the company among various external audiences.


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop and drive proactive and reactive issue/reputation/community plans for UnitedHealthcare, Community & State and Medicaid.

  • Develop, manage and implement reputation/community plans with goals, objectives, strategies, and priorities for assigned region.

  • Manage issues, proactive and reactive communications efforts for the business, working closely with all enterprise partners.

  • Develop, implement and evaluate plans, strategies and tactics that promote UnitedHealthcare's health and well-being programs and services.

  • Identify and engage with appropriate community partners and influencers to build positive relationships and represent UnitedHealthcare’s interests.

  • Partner with marketing and business leaders to identify and recommend local event participation, managing UnitedHealthcare community engagement to build brand and reputation.

  • Promote executive visibility to ensure leaders are at events aligned with key strategic objectives and interests in the markets, and help determine appropriate external engagement including boards, panels and other speaking opportunities.

  • Identify opportunities to submit UnitedHealthcare programs for awards to raise positive visibility and improve reputation.

  • Partner with corporate social responsibility to coordinate employee volunteerism and engagement in the local market.

  • Liaise with local representatives from outside organizations to promote joint projects and initiatives and maximize positive exposure.

Socialize UnitedHealthcare and business-segment value stories with key local stakeholders.

  • Coordinate with business partners to ensure all messaging and content is current and approved for dissemination.

  • Maintain extensive and positive relationships with all key media.

  • Customize UHC and business messaging for appropriate application and relevance.

  • Provide consultation and training for business partners to ensure effective and consistent message delivery and implementation of communications initiatives.

Localize and implement agreed upon UnitedHealthcare and national business-segment and functional communications initiatives and programs.

  • Partner with business-segment communication teams in driving local execution of programs.
  • Coordinate with local leadership and business partners to execute initiatives and programs.
  • Monitor clippings, and develop regular reporting to demonstrate return on objectives for businesses and brand. 
  • Support national media teams with local issue support as requested.
  • Direct agency partners for media and communications support as needed.

Required Qualifications:

  • 8+ years’ experience working in external communications, public relations

  • Experience in crisis communications and issues management

  • Experience developing and executing external communications, issues management, community and corporate visibility communications plans, including key messages, talking points, FAQs and statements

  • Proven track record of developing, pitching to and placing stories in local print, broadcast and online media

  • Experience building relationships with external partners

  • Knowledge of digital and social media campaign planning and execution

  • Strong written and verbal skills required, including experience writing executive-level communications, talking points, bylined articles, etc.

  • Knowledge of AP Style

  • Experience working in health care or with or for a large publicly-traded company

  • Ability to work with and interact with multiple executive and business teams

  • Ability to work as part of a cross-functional team within integrated, national and Communications teams

  • Experience managing consultants and agencies

  • Basic understanding of federal and state regulatory environment

  • Must be able to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously

  • Computer literacy (Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

  • Ability to travel (domestically) as required
