Associate General Counsel at OptumInsight is primarily responsible for providing business legal advice to a variety of business lines within OptumInsight.  This role will have a high level of interaction with internal business units, external customers, and strategic partners to provide timely updates and counsel on various legal and regulatory issues.  

   Primary Responsibilities: 
  • Proactively identify and resolve, and counsel internal clients on regulatory and related legal matters impacting the OptumInsight payment integrity businesses
  • Respond to inquiries from external stakeholders including insured plan members, medical providers and regulatory entities and effectively resolve any escalated situations
  • Assist in counseling business groups on strategic business initiatives, including the development and delivery of new products and services
  • Develop best practices, including policies and procedures, for addressing emerging legal and business risks
  • Participate in and lead negotiations and consultative discussions with key customers and vendors
  • Collaborate with colleagues across the Optum and UnitedHealth Group legal departments and businesses
  • Ability to work independently with a high degree of personal initiative to understand complex legal and corporate issues
  • Ability to evaluate and determine appropriate legal courses of action to meet business needs
  • Ability to build and maintain rapport with superiors, peers, subordinates, internal company contacts and external stakeholders



Required Qualifications:
  • Undergraduate degree
  • Juris Doctorate degree
  • 5+ years of professional work experience
  • Experience operating in a highly matrixed and complex business environment
  • Law firm or in-house experience
  • Must be located in Minnesota - relocation not provided
 Preferred Qualifications:
  • An understanding of the healthcare industry including coverage, benefits, claims payment and payor issues
  • Experience with fraud investigations and recovery actions, including actions involving state and federal law enforcement
  • An understanding of relevant laws including ERISA, HIPAA, False Claims Act, Anti-Kickback Statute, Stark Law, FDCPA and TCPA
  • An understanding of legal issues in data analytics, the use of big data in research and product development, and data de-identification
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, as well as excellent presentation skills
