Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Heart Vascular Supervisor and upon the request of the physician, sets up and operates many various types of cardiovascular diagnostic equipment utilized to determine the extent of disease process, injury and/or illness. Performs these tests using a predetermined protocol and sound judgment, providing the highest quality state of the art patient care diagnostic services. Performs venipuncture to initiate an intravenous line. Knows the indications, hazards, and the contraindications for all diagnostic modalities, including routine Cardiac and Thallium Stress Testing, Holter Monitoring, Event Monitors and electrocardiograms. Maintains appropriate patient and administrative records. Demonstrates cardiovascular diagnostic techniques to staff and/or students and for orientation purposes. Participates in in-service education and collaborates with other medical personnel as needed. Responsible for quality assurance monitoring

 

Operates many various types of cardiovascular diagnostic equipment, including routine Pharmacologic Stress testing, Pharmacological Thallium Stress testing, Holter Monitoring, Electrocardiograms, and Signal Average ECG’s according to protocol and in a safe manner.

 

Performs venipuncture to initiate an IV line.

 

Prepares data for physicians interpretation according to protocol.

 

Explains and understands as appropriate the objective, purpose, and benefits of all cardiovascular diagnostic procedures, tests, and equipment

 

Demonstrates a good understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular system. Demonstrates a good understanding of the theory of all therapeutic and diagnostic duties performed.

 

 

 

Qualifications

 

Graduate of an approved school for practical nursing or medical assistant or equivalent experience

 

Previous cardiovascular experience and six (6) months training approved by the Medical Co-Directors of the Cardiac Health Center

 

Complete knowledge of basic cardiac arrhythmias, cardiac anatomy, conduction system, and use of the EKG machines preferred.

 

Able to perform venipuncture in order to initiate an IV line according to departmental procedures.

 

At least six (6) months patient care contact.

 

Typing and medical terminology required, as well as previous computer experience.

 

Sufficient knowledge and training to perform as a Cardiographic/EKG technician preferred.
