Director, Engineering & Process Automation

The Director of Engineering role is responsible for providing leadership, direction and execution of strategic vision for a team accountable for developing improvements in centralized engineering services.  The role will spearhead all Scholastic engineering activities and establish a culture of process improvement throughout many distribution centers. Execution of the centralized services capital, systems and processes improvement strategy by developing and implementing an operating plan, processes and layout, and equipment selection plan to optimize processes in operations across the network, resulting in efficient and cost effective operations. This position would develop the automation and controls strategy and engineering capabilities for Scholastic distribution centers.



Distribution Center Design & Automation


  • Develop the distribution vision, strategy/technology roadmap that supports convergence and adoption of operational technologies (e.g. Warehouse/DC of the Future)

  • Understand and leverage emerging robotics automation technology and assess their feasibility for use across the network

  • Develop and implement automated Material Handling Solutions within select distribution facilities

  • Lead the design of distribution facilities, including new facilities, facility retrofits, conveyor changes, automation equipment and other material handling equipment changes

  • Lead overall WMS/WES design and configuration for both automated and manual facilities

  • Develop and maintain relationships with key automation vendors to support organization strategies

  • Drive the execution of the strategy throughout centralized services, resulting in increased efficiency, productivity, improved quality and cost-effectiveness

Process Design & Continuous Improvement

  • Develop and lead network solutions for continuous improvement (CI) savings associated with automation and efficiency improvements, while partnering with leaders across all segments of the company

  • Develop and lead network solutions for continuous improvement (CI) savings associated with automation, process design and efficiency improvements, partnering with leaders across all segments of the global supply chain
  • Direct the implementation and support a labor management program and software configuration
  • Direct the development and maintain multi-variable labor standards

  • Lead the engineering team to identify, define and implement process improvement opportunities

  • Address all aspects of change, including people, processes, systems, and equipment

  • Introduce and adapt improvement methodologies as appropriate to drive change (ex. Lean or Six Sigma)

Project & People Management

  • Responsible for developing and managing the Capital program to support both strategic and operations initiatives

  • Identify and create the functional processes, practices, tools and techniques required for robust engineering project delivery, aligned with operational technology/Lean development process philosophies

  • Prepare and analyze unit plans and reports

  • Create an effective work environment by developing a common vision, setting clear objectives, expecting teamwork, recognizing outstanding performance and maintaining open communications

  • Principal communicator and coach responsible for the recruitment, career development, performance management, and succession planning for the Engineering organization

  • Direct the Engineering team to develop and execute industrialization/capital plans for new projects/investments

  • Engages cross-functional management, through collaboration and building relationships, in the execution of the process improvement strategy to further ensure enterprise-wide acceptance and compliance


  • Requires a minimum of seven (7) plus years of experience as an engineer in retail and/or e-commerce distribution, with a broad range of operational technologies and processes
  • Five plus (5+) years of successful experience in the development and implementation of automation and robotic solutions within warehouse/distribution space
  • Complex Automation solution development
  • Custom Machine design experience
  • Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC)
  • Human Machine Interface (HMI)
  • Robot Simulation Software
  • Master’s degree in Industrial or Mechanical engineering or related field required, or a combination of education and equivalent work experience
  • Lean/Six Sigma (Black/Master Black) certification desired
  • Analytical, planning and organizing, sound judgment, decision making and leadership skills required
  • Experience with time & motion data collection software and standard deviation techniques
  • Advanced working knowledge of Microsoft Office products with an emphasis in Excel and Access
  • Expertise in integrating, maintaining & troubleshooting conveyor systems (e.g. sensors & controls) and WMS/WCS/WES software
  • Dynamic verbal and written communication skills in a distributed organization
  • Ability to analyze and provide solutions for cost reduction through process improvements and cost/benefit analysis
  • Capable of designing and recommending department layouts and product flows in the distribution center
  • Able to identify operational bottlenecks and develop, analyze and present cost efficient solutions
  • Experience in serving as technical expert on specialized projects or programs; act as advisor to management and/or customers
  • Effective at providing guidance to distribution and logistics related to effective and efficient use of assets and processes
  • Experience in identifying capacity impacts to distribution centers associated with varying parameters within the supply chain
  • Experience in developing preferred methods/Standard Operating Procedures
  • Proficient at utilizing labor data to cost justify capital expenditure and process change ROI
  • Skillful at using labor and material cost data to compare and recommend process change and communicate accurate process costs to senior management
  • Able to conduct ergonomic evaluations, recommending and implementing improvements to work area designs
  • Has the ability to take ideas from concept to implementation and can influence decision making with all stakeholders
  • Possess superior multi-tasking ability to meet concurrent project deadlines, highly organized. Project Management Certification desired
  • Ability to drive process improvements and work within a team to resolve problems
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, professional attitude and approach (and the ability to interact with individuals at various levels of the organization, up and down)
  • Experience with work measurement & performance management programs, process automation, conveyor design and optimization, large project management, and warehouse systems
  • Experience with labor reporting systems
  • Willing to travel 50-70% (less for incumbents located in Jefferson City or St. Louis, MO.)
