Director of Category Management (Enterprise Procurement)

The Director of Category Management will report directly into the Chief Procurement Officer and will lead multiple teams to develop category strategies, design sourcing plans, oversee negotiations, implement contracts, and drive successful supplier relationships. This leader will work with the CPO to build a high performing team that can execute on those strategies. This leader is also responsible for ensuring strong alignment with, and becoming a trusted advisor to, key functional leaders. This leader will also partner with business and sourcing leadership in Humana’s business segments to drive enterprise-wide value.


  • Together with US business segment leadership, define and implement the long-term vision and near-term strategies for indirect procurement
  • Develop risk- and probability-adjusted multi-year savings forecasts and annual savings goals
  • Lead teams in developing category strategies based on sourcing profession best practices, including supply market analyses, Porter’s Five Forces, should-cost models, process and domain expertise
  • Leverage internal and external resources, as part of the operating model, to deliver results in the most effective and efficient way
  • Implement staff training and development programs to enhance general leadership skills, sourcing expertise, and domain knowledge
  • Oversee analysis of qualitative and quantitative supplier characteristics, including supplier capabilities, supplier goals and objectives, risk profile, and supplier's financial position for requisite categories
  • Implement a supplier segmentation program that differentiates the sourcing/management model for different supply categories and suppliers
  • Oversee development of multi-year sourcing pipelines that drive total value, including cost savings and supplier innovation for Humana
  • Develop programs to achieve corporate supplier diversity objectives
  • Manage and lead team through all sourcing activities, including RFI/RFP development and implementation
  • Work collaboratively with the Continuous Improvement team for multi-business unit project implementations
  • Drive corporate compliance to the preferred-supplier program via end-user change management and communications programs
  • Oversee staff who manage day-to-day operational support for select programs and categories
  • Work closely with Procurement Operations and Corporate Payables to ensure a seamless end-to-end experience for associates
  • Develop trusted advisor relationships with key executive leaders as advocates; work with those leaders to identify initiatives and team resources and structures to execute those initiatives and to generate support and advocacy for the sourcing programs
  • Drive change and behavior through influence, not mandate
  • Develop and implement leading sourcing practices for environmental sustainability and supplier code of conduct
  • Mitigate legal and commercial risk for Humana
  • Participate in profession and industry forums to benchmark with other leading firms, and to enhance Humana’s visibility and recruiting capability


Required Qualifications

  • 4-year degree in related field, preferably in a business or technical discipline
  • At least 10 years of relevant sourcing experience
  • Demonstrated experience in defining the vision, mission, strategy and tactics for the areas of responsibility
  • Outstanding communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills, including assertiveness, courage, and the ability to influence others
  • Excellent relationship management skills, demonstrating mature confidence and integrity
  • Business analysis skills to drive and implement sourcing programs and services aligned with business partners strategies
  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously, both as a lead and as a part of a team
  • Ability to work in a team environment to collate and act upon feedback from all levels within the business and sourcing environments
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities of business partners in a complex, multi-business segment environment
  • Demonstrated experience in supplier diversity, supplier code of conduct, environmental concerns, and US/international regulatory requirements
  • Strong financial and business acumen required
  • Ability to assimilate, analyze, draw conclusions, and make recommendations from multi-faceted and often ambiguous data
  • Ability to motivate project team members and stakeholders to meet established deadlines
  • Ability to be flexible and willing to learn new skill sets quickly as the need arises
  • Effectiveness in working collaboratively with cross-functional teams
