Director, Value Management Consulting Services - Telecommute

The Director for Value Management (VMD) is responsible for the overall strategic direction of Value Management operations for Optum Advisory Services (OAS) Cost and Operations Team (COST). The Director of Value Management will also serve in various roles within the client sites, depending upon areas of expertise and client need.  In partnership with the OAS COST vice president, senior directors, directors and engagement managers, the VMD will provide subject matter expertise and strategic direction that complements the client-based delivery of high quality, physician engagement, as well as cost effective, customer-focused patient care while reducing variation in cost and quality of patient care. The VMD will also recommend strategies to enhance and/or grow OAS Value Management services, and monitor the overall performance of Value Management engagements over time.  The VMD will work directly with OAS senior team members, consultants and analysts to perform contract-directed clinical improvement projects across multiple simultaneous clients.  In the absence of specific client work related to value management, the VMD will be expected to serve clients in other areas of clinical consulting, depending upon specific areas of expertise, such as perioperative services, workforce, patient throughput, and/or care management.  The job responsibilities may vary depending upon the needs of individual client engagement.    You’ll enjoy the flexibility to telecommute* from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges.  
Primary Responsibilities:

  • Oversees the delivery, product development and analytic requirements for delivery of high quality Value Management consulting engagements in collaboration with  the OAS team
  • Assesses, designs and implements strategic client Value Management programs targeted to promote the growth and enhancement of existing Value Management structures working in partnership with the organization’s executive and physician leadership
  • Provides day-to-day project management, subject matter expertise and/or oversight to Value Management engagements or other clinical consulting engagements depending upon additional clinical expertise
  • Oversees and manages OAS consultants and analysts either directly or through a matrixed, client-based environment
  • Ensures that client expectations and contract deliverables are met during assigned engagement
  • Coordinates the development of short and long plans across the client enterprise to drive effective clinical and non-clinical sourcing and utilization
  • Prepares executive level reports and dashboards for demonstrating outcome trends
  • Participates in supplier/service contract negotiations as necessary
  • Oversees the establishment of internal processes and tools to monitor compliance with supply contracts
  • Partners with OAS leadership to develop engagement specific budgets and monitors compliance with budget for active engagements
  • Collaborates with other members of the OAS team to deliver consistent, fiscally responsible, and constantly improving engagement deliverables
  • Participates as a member of various teams to create innovative solutions associated with the strategic development of client programs

Required Qualifications:

  • Masters/Graduate Degree or Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing with preference given to additional degrees in related fields such as Healthcare Administration, Allied Health, and/or Business Administration
  • Minimum of 10 years professional experience in Value Management
  • Minimum 5 years prior consulting experience
  • Ability to work independently with minimal or no supervision
  • Prior experience with physician engagement/relations
  • Proven experience developing and implementing operating plans, and analyzing financial and quality data
  • Demonstrated experience with managing multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability to implement centralized processes in a large complex environment
  • Demonstrated success in yielding unprecedented results within the area of health care Value Management
  • Ability to communicate effectively and articulate all relevant perspectives
  • Proven engagement with physicians, and ability to provide valuable insights and logical explanations when faced with difficult questions
  • Proven ability to be a creative an innovative thinker
  • Ability to develop computer work sheets and presentations
  • Proven commitment in a team setting, and ability to serve as a member of the Clinical management team
  • Ability to travel up to 80% (Monday – Thursday weekly)

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Experience in multiple healthcare provider settings such as community, academic and ambulatory settings
  • Experience working in physician-led, integrated healthcare delivery organization a plus
  • CVAHP Certification
  • Clinical consulting experience across multiple clinical and cost improvement-related areas, in addition to value analysis management
  • Experience as a successful influencer who can interact effectively with diverse groups of stakeholders such as other physicians, healthcare administration, and staff
  • A proven leader in demonstrating how to build a partnership between physicians and administration
  • Proven communication skills, including listening and presenting
  • Ability to build trust and confidence with utmost integrity
  • Proven knowledge of how to get things done in a complex organization
  • Ability to facilitate and lead successful outcomes that are mutually satisfactory to all stakeholders
