The Drug File Administrator position combines knowledge of the pharmaceutical industry, the data provided in the Medispan Drug File, the ability to create and run queries via Microsoft Office or AQL based on database values and the evaluation the results. This includes both routine maintenance and project related activities. By becoming immersed in daily activities of the department there is an opportunity to improve or build automated and streamlined solutions that enhance workflow and accuracy of output. The position supports all quality and process improvement efforts. The position requires the ability to identify issues and work independently on a solution.


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Monitor and/or help monitor reports generated pursuant to drug file loads or other
    initiated processes for routine maintenance based on the client's requirements
  • Become familiar with all essential processes and identify areas where processes can
    be improved. Communicate with Industry Relations, Formulary Teams, Clinical
    Account Managers, IT and other departments within the company as necessary
  • Provide information as necessary to appropriate internal and external contacts
    regarding Technical Bulletin or general drug file announcements from Medispan
  • Conduct research to provide information in order to respond to drug file inquiries
  • Subject Matter Expert for how the Medispan Drug File is used within OptumRx's
    various systems
  • Evaluate and recommend tools and applications that will sustain the continuous
    growth of the department
  • Review requests for manual drug file additions, and determine if they are appropriate
    in accordance with procedures and policies. Recommend alternatives, as necessary,
    to address the issue regarding prescription adjudication
  • Participate and/or lead projects related to OptumRx or customer specific drug file
    projects including user testing
  • Ability to work independently and understand connection between coding and system
  • Perform other duties as necessary to meet the objectives of OptumRx and supporting
    clients and/or COE objectives

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or higher education
  • Certified Pharmacy Technician
  • 3+ years of experience of MediSpan’s Master Drug Database, and familiarity with First Data Bank’s Drug File
  • 3+ years of experience with prescription benefit, formulary and clinical program design
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Visual Basics, Access, and other analytic
  • 3+ years of data mining experience and database design and concepts. 3 to 5 years
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule if required due to changes in business

Preferred qualifications:

  • Ability to create and perform analysis for database updating and management
  • Ability to clearly and effectively organize, display and present data to internal staff
  • Demonstrate ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills
  • Strong customer service orientation and commitment to professionalism
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel, Access, and SQL
  • A good understanding of how RxClaim works
  • Prior experience with creating reports and analyzing information
