The Engineering Training & Process Improvement Manager is a full-time, year-round position located in the Mammoth Hot Springs area of Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming. This position is responsible for development, implementation and management of a comprehensive Engineering Department training program. The objective of the Engineering Training Program is to provide all Engineering Department employees (year-round and seasonal) with the information and the development of skills required to safely, effectively and efficiently contribute to the company’s mission of providing “legendary hospitality”.


Additionally, this position is responsible for assisting the Director and Assistant Directors in building a department-wide learning culture and implementing continuous improvement techniques.  This involves both the analysis of current processes and the development of new processes.  In either case, the objective is to standardize, streamline and sustain department processes in order to continuously improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the department.

Responsibilities of theTraining & Process Improvement Manager


      The position’s training-related responsibilities include:

  • Developing, coordinating and managing Engineering Department employee training for key areas including: safety, regulatory compliance, National Park Service policies and procedures, Xanterra company-wide and Engineering Department policies and procedures and Process Improvement.
  • Coordinating and assisting with on-boarding and training of both year-round and seasonal employees.
  • Deploying various training methods including mentoring, coaching, on-the-job and classroom training, e-learning, train-the-trainer, workshops, conferences, etc.
  • Assessing the success of training, identifying opportunities for improvement and implementing these improvements
  • Researching new training materials and methods that might enhance the training experience and provide value to employees.
  • Identify future training needs and create curriculum to facilitate that training.
  • Identifying gaps in training material or curriculum that should be filled to ensure safety and productivity of employees.
  • Adhering to Xanterra’s sustainability program and incorporating same into training opportunities as applicable.
  • Liaising with Yellowstone Risk Management Department to ensure Xanterra’s annual core safety and risk training requirements are met.
  • Performing other duties and tasks as assigned.

The position’s training-related responsibilities include:

  • Assisting Director and Assistant Directors in creating a learning culture within the Engineering Department with the goal of ensuring successes are copied and failures are not repeated.
  • Assisting Director and Assistant Directors in institutionalizing and championing Lean thinking and principles throughout the Engineering Department. This will involve:
    • Advocating and demonstrating the benefits of applying Lean methodologies to achieving business objectives and financial performance targets.
    • Training Engineering Department staff and other stakeholders on lean process improvement principles and strategies.
    • Facilitating Kaizen / quick improvement events that deliver quantifiable results.
  • Developing new procedures and well as systematically improving existing procedures - by engaging stakeholders and using lean principles. This will involve:
    • Assisting stakeholders in the development of standardized workflows, instructions, and procedures.
    • Using quality engineering principles, tools and practices to develop and optimize systems and processes aligned with the overall business and quality vision.
  • Facilitating meetings and presentations to share ideas and findings.
  • Maintaining currency in areas of responsibility by reading relevant journals, books, or magazine articles.
  • Adhering to Xanterra’s sustainability program and objectives and incorporating same into process as applicable.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Essential Skills and Knowledge


The Engineering Training and Process Improvement Manager must:

  • Have earned a Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • Have a talent for, and successful experience in developing and providing training.
  • Be certified as a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt (preferred). If not certified, the candidate must have continuous improvement experience and be willing to complete a Lean Green Belt certification within 6 months and a Black Belt Certification within 12 months of hire (online – company funded).
  • Have exceptional organizational skills.
  • Be an effective, inspiring, persuasive, passionate communicator.
  • Must be proficient with the Microsoft Office software suite.
  • Have the ability and willingness to work across all levels to lead and influence stakeholders.
  • Possess a desire to learn new skills, tools and techniques.
  • Be an energetic self-starter.
  • Have a demonstrated history of delivering on commitments.


Physical Requirements: 

The Engineering Training and Process Improvement Manager must:

  • Be capable of lifting and moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Be at least 21 years of age and possess a current, valid driver’s license and a safe driving record.
  • Be capable of working at a computer for several hours each workday.



The Engineering Training and Process Improvement Manager is authorized and expected to:

  • Stop unsafe work practices whenever observed.
  • Stop work practices which have the potential to violate environmental laws and regulations whenever observed.
