Position Summary

Lead the General Merchandise, Seasonal, and Greeting Card businesses including all assortment, pricing, and merchandising functions with the objective of further developing and growing the business, and market share, while meeting or exceeding budgeted financial goals. Clearly establish a new vision for the businesses, articulate said vision to, and gain buy in from, the total organization.

Job Responsibilities

  • Actively manage the General Merchandise, Seasonal, Greeting Card, and Housewares categories to achieve annual financial goals including sales objectives, retail and wholesale gross margin, wholesale income, shrink, known loss, inventory turns and service level, making strategic and tactical adjustments as necessary. Must establish Giant Eagle & Market District stores as authority on all strategically relevant categories under pervue.
  • Develop the strategic plan and annual operating plan (budget) in accordance with Line of Business strategic goals and in cooperation with the Vice President and Finance.
  • Understand, and lead team to act upon, trends in new products, consumer behavior, share, competition, fixturing and store layouts to inform decisions and drastically accelerate innovation.
  • Lead, motivate, and mentor staff consisting of category manager, planner, and/or merchandisers, contracted (external) resources, and support staff by setting clear objectives, ensuring the preparation of Development Action Plans, providing ongoing feedback and coaching to prepare staff for potential promotional opportunities.
  • Develop and maintain productive relationships with vendors, stores, logistics, distribution, marketing, wholesale and retail accounting and space management to insure all constituencies' voices are heard. Assure that all parts of the organization understand and are "bought into" the vision for the businesses, and that plans are executable.
  • Oversee department layouts and planograms, acting as final arbiter within all assigned categories and as voice of the business in format overall space discussions. Must drastically improve the presentation, organization, and total store integration of assigned categories.
  • Act as the central merchandising and buying interface for all formats (Supermarket, Market District, Get Go, and Giant Eagle/Market District Express), working cooperatively with the merchandising counterparts for each banner.
  • Directly responsible for assigned categories including assortment, pricing strategy, promotion planning and monitoring. Work closely with internal and external stakeholders to develop category initiatives and tactics to achieve financial goals. Must lead drive to drastically improve margins, reduce waste/shrink, and establish new vision/focus for the line of business.
  • Partner across all Lines of Business, creating relevant, intuitive, and exciting partnerships around product/category launches in order to increase basket size and enhance the overall customer experience.
