Position Summary

Direct and account for the safe and efficient transportation of grocery, produce, dairy, and frozen food inventories from 1 Retail Support Centers to 150 stores on a 7 day a week, 24 hour a day schedule by effectively using personnel, coaching and developing staff, and implementing programs that maximize profitability.

Job Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership that ensures the success of on-going safety initiatives by actively reviewing all accident reports, ensuring safety training, leveraging on-board camera system, re-training and disciplinary action is properly administered, and partnering with the Safety Department to develop effective safety and coaching programs to ensure this is a safe place to work by meeting our safety goals.
  • Interpret and administer the intent of the labor agreement properly to meet the Company's and customer's needs to maintain positive management/labor relations while enforcing contractual or corporate policies which make Giant Eagle a better place to work
  • Establish driver engagement programs which improve customer service, Team Member culture, and safety.
  • Responsible for supervising, mentoring and serving a management team consisting of around 23 exempt and non-exempt team members and monitoring the performance of 150 union drivers and loaders
  • Collaborate in the development, implementation, and evaluation of Giant Eagle's long term and short-term Supply Chain strategies designed to improve sales, reduce costs and make Giant Eagle a better place to work.
  • Develop and administer a fiscal operating plan of approximately 24 million for the Transportation Department.
  • Ensure driver labor standards are accurate and reasonable leading to efficient trip times while supporting driver safety.
  • Direct the training of Team Members on systems and procedures in the transportation department to ensure safe, timely delivery of orders and update such systems and training as necessary to meet the Company's and customer's needs
  • Ensure compliance with local, state and Federal Department of Transportation's regulatory demands by providing training for Team Members in proper procedures and policies, overseeing administration of required tests, and compliance and maintenance of required documentation.
  • Identify and recommend purchase or lease of equipment needed to continue to meet customer requirements in the most efficient manner.
  • Plan for the use of 3rd party logistics company that provide support during business fluctuations to support on-time delivery to our locations.
  • Work with Supply Chain planning team to develop load plans and routes that improve cube and reduce miles
  • Develop staffing plans and driver schedules that meet the needs of the business. Understand contractual obligations with labor unions, assist in negotiations; change when necessary
  • Responsible for use, application and selection of transportation systems including Peoplenet, TMW, Smart Drive and any future systems
  • Oversee all Transportation and fleet related activities for outbound transportation: Direct the day to day outbound business. Drive productivity/labor costs and Transportation Management software implementations. Drive Transportation productivity according to volume levels and capturing synergies across the entire fleet. Management of DOT regulations for all, management of Fleet Tax and Licensing. P&L monitoring, reporting and budgeting for each transportation division. Manage, direct, mentor, training and motivating a mid-management team that have day to day responsibilities
  • Responsible for budget development, expense control and/or revenue generation for multiple departments or divisions. Amount of Budgetary Responsibility: \\$5mm +
  • Responsible for direct and indirect supervision of team members in one or more departments.

Education and Training Required

  • Bachelors Degree or related equivalent work experience

Experience Required

  • 5 to 10 years
