This is a highly specialized product consultant position that requires deep and broad healthcare X12 knowledge in terms of industry standards and associated code sets and edits.  Job requires extensive analytical and research work and the ability to translate healthcare industry standards into tangible administrative edits within the product.  Requires work with internal or external business constituents to help determine product content or respond to product inquiries. May be project-based and involve working within multiple product functions.


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Uses pertinent data and facts to identify and solve a range of problems within area of expertise
  • Investigates non-standard requests and problems, with some assistance from others
  • Prioritizes and organizes own work to meet deadlines
  • Provides explanations and information to others on topics within area of expertise
  • Generally work is self-directed and not prescribed
  • Works with less structured, more complex issues
  • Serves as a subject matter expert and resource to others
  • Research and review payer companion guides and TR3s for new industry edits, changes to transactions, or use of new X12 transactions
  • Analyze industry publications / sites, payer publications/sites and government publications/sites to keep up with latest trends and changes in administrative data
  • Participate in industry work groups such as X12 and WEDI to represent Optum’s position
  • Use business plans and roadmaps to drive product planning efforts and translate roadmaps to buildable features
  • Collaborate with functional support partners and other applicable stakeholders to help design solutions, and ensure alignment with business and product plans ( revenue commitments, capabilities, functional impacts, cross functional roles)
  • Work with product leaders to gather/analyze/validate applicable data from internal and external sources (e.g., clients, prospects, potential customers) to identify market characteristics/needs/problems (e.g., market opportunities, financials, technology trends, user preferences, industry/regulatory/legal standards, internal product trends)
  • Demonstrate understanding of the regulatory landscape
  • Define / write business requirements that address market/product problems / needs (e.g., technology, operations, staffing)
  • Provide input for status dashboards to drive program/product management processes / reviews (e.g., key metrics, schedules, checkpoints)
  • Adhere to or champion use of applicable product development guidelines/procedures (e.g., Product Development Methodology, Product Development and Release, Product Lifecycle Management)
  • Work with engineering delivery to ensure development of the capabilities needed to meet product strategies and plans (e.g., technology, operational services, consulting, capacity management)
  • Aid in development of required product collateral, in collaboration with applicable business partners (e.g., Marketing, Clinical, Legal, Operations, Regulatory)
  • Ensure that identified issues/problems are addressed prior to product launch (e.g., monitor product testing activities as required)

Required Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of healthcare X12 experience
  • 7+ years of healthcare experience - preferably both payer and provider experience
  • 5+ years of research and analytical experience
  • 5+ years of experience researching payer companion guides, and TR3s
  • Knowledge of healthcare and administrative industry code sets used in X12 transactions, including, but not limited to HCPCS / CPT Codes, ICD-10-CM Codes, ICD-10-PCS Codes, Claim Adjustment Reason Codes, Remittance Advice Remark Codes
  • Demonstrated ability to work on matrixed teams and prioritize deliverables
  • Knowledge of agile development processes and ability to work within those processes
