THE OPPORTUNITY

Paperbacks Production Editor oversees production of around 75 Trade chapter books and novels per year in addition to related sales materials, and editions for ebooks, libraries, and the school market. Responsible for keeping editors and designers on schedule. Oversees freelancers, for copyediting and proofreading of manuscripts and typeset text. Checks for quality assurance of text, illustrations, and photos, and covers all stages from manuscript to finished books.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES

• Handles book production from copyedit through bound book, including bound galleys (where applicable) and ebooks
  o Reviews copyedit and passes (assess freelancer work as needed) of covers and interior text
  o Answer copyedit/proofreader/editor queries when possible
  o Keep book/series style sheet updated and enforce house style
• Carefully review materials (manuscripts, art, covers/jackets) and traffic them through various in-house departments
• Work closely with creative, editorial, and manufacturing departments on all aspects of a book
• Work with Associate Production Director to create and maintain schedules
• Follow up with editorial/design when deadlines are missed
• Lead biweekly status meetings, and attend various other meetings as needed
• Enforce department best practices


HOW YOU CAN FIT

• Excellent copyediting and proofreading skills
• Ability to meet deadlines while maintaining high standards of quality and juggling multiple projects
• Ability to communicate clearly, effectively, and professionally with multiple project stakeholders
• Strong knowledge of grammar, spelling, and punctuation and The Chicago Manual of Style
• Strong computer skills – MAC preferred -- including facility with advanced functions of MS Word and Adobe Acrobat

EXPERIENCE NEED:
• 2-3 years experience as a production editor at a trade publisher or equivalent; children’s book experience a plus
