Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) is responsible for identifying and quantifying key risks facing UnitedHealth Group. In this role, you will be challenged to leverage your skills in quantitative analysis, problem solving, project management, and in relationship management to lead projects in a matrixed environment with the goal of estimating the potential exposures related to the risks identified by the ERM Team through the application of financial and statistical modeling methods.

The top candidate for this role will be an independent, critical thinker, with the personal presence to bolster the franchise of Enterprise Treasury’s ERM role with senior executive business and functional management. They will provide evidence of accomplishment of goals through formal or informal channels; resilience in overcoming obstacles; and ability to influence others to drive for results. They will have a proven ability to dissect complex problems / issues and implement solutions by earning the confidence, trust and respect of internal and external partners to achieve successful outcomes.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Working with business and functional senior executive risk owners to more quantitatively assess UnitedHealth Group’s key risks (identified through the qualitative ERM process) using statistical methods to determine the severity of a potential loss and the probability of the loss occurring
  • Clearly communicating results of quantitative, statistical analysis to business and functional senior executive management in terms that are readily understood, i.e., in plain English. Demonstrating to senior executive management how the model results can be used to allocate resources (human and financial capital) to mitigate risk (cost benefit analysis)
  • Conducting root cause analysis
  • Working with designated senior executive business and functional risk owners and SMEs to:
    • Identify and understand key risk drivers for qualitative risks and apply experience and judgment to model potential loss exposures for “hard to quantify” risks
    • Construct quantitative models for individual risks by dissecting risks into their component parts and quantifying each component using SME input and/or publically available third party loss data
    • Apply modeling skills and statistical methods to create a quantitative distribution for key risks by building up the risk from its individual risk components
    • Uses quantitative results to facilitate a discussion with risk owners on risk appetite, tolerance and limit measurements
    • Facilitate linkage to existing business risk and performance management
    • Enhance risk communication
    • Supporting the annual qualitative ERM risk identification process
    • Monitoring business and functional metric-based risk monitoring and reporting; establishing feedback loops through the ERM Program
    • Collaborating internally with centralized risk management departments (e.g., Enterprise Information Security, SEC reporting, Legal Compliance and Regulatory Affairs, Internal Audit Advisory Services, etc.) to ensure cross functional understanding and communication of risks throughout the Enterprise
    • Researching and recommending best practice improvements to evolve, mature and streamline the ERM Program serving as a catalyst for innovation and continuous process improvement
    • Documenting and explaining to internal senior executives, regulators and credit rating agencies the stochastic modeling of both quantitative and qualitative risks and how to interpret and use the results to further the understanding of potential loss exposures (what could happen and how likely it is to happen) as well as to support future regulatory and/or internal audits of the ERM Program
    • Other assignments and projects and requests as needed

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business, Statistics, Mathematics or Economics
  • Business experience, including complex financial and/or statistical modeling experience
