Regional Communications Director - Southeast

The Regional Communications Director will develop and drive proactive reputation/community plans for UnitedHealthcare and its lines of business in identified region [Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Arkansas].  The Director will socialize UHC and business-segment value stories with key local stakeholders and localize and implement UHC and national business-segment and functional communications initiatives and programs.


As a Regional Communications Director, you are responsible for working with health plan leaders, national line-of-business teams, local government affairs, social responsibility and other functional team members to build, protect and strengthen the credibility of the company among various external stakeholders. 

Primary Responsibilities: 


In collaboration with national teams, develop and drive proactive reputation/community plans for UnitedHealthcare and its lines of business (Commercial, Medicare and Medicaid).

  • Develop, manage and implement reputation/community plans with goals, objectives, strategies, and priorities for assigned region.

  • Localize line of business messaging and identify compelling story angles to pitch local traditional and non-traditional media.

  • Identify and engage with appropriate community partners and influencers to build positive relationships and represent UnitedHealthcare’s interests.

  • Partner with marketing, government affairs and business leaders to identify and recommend local event participation, managing UnitedHealthcare community engagement to build brand and reputation.

  • Promote executive visibility to ensure leaders are at events aligned with key strategic objectives and interests in the markets, and help determine appropriate external engagement including boards, panels and other speaking opportunities.

  • Identify opportunities to submit UnitedHealthcare programs for awards to raise positive visibility and improve reputation.

Socialize UnitedHealthcare and business-segment value stories with key local stakeholders. 

  • Coordinate with business partners to ensure all messaging and content is current and approved for dissemination.

  • Maintain extensive and positive relationships with all key regional media.

  • Customize UHC and business messaging for local application and relevance.

  • Provide consultation and training for business partners to ensure effective and consistent message delivery and implementation of communications initiatives.

Localize and implement agreed upon UnitedHealthcare and national business-segment and functional communications initiatives and programs.

  • Partner with national and business-segment external communication teams in driving local execution of programs.
  • Coordinate with local leadership and business partners to execute initiatives and programs.
  • Monitor news clippings and regularly demonstrate return on objectives for businesses and brand. 
  • Support national media teams with local issue support as requested.
  • Direct agency partners for local on-ground media and communications support as needed.

Required Qualifications:

  • 8+ years’ experience working in external communications, public relations is required

  • Experience developing and executing external communications, community and corporate visibility communications plans, including key messages, talking points, FAQs and media statements

  • Proven track record of developing, pitching to and placing stories in local print, broadcast and online media

  • Experience building relationships with external partners is required; relationships within the [state(s)] markets

  • Strong written and verbal skills required, including experience writing executive-level communications, talking points, bylined articles, etc.

  • Experience in crisis communications and issues

  • Knowledge of AP Style

  • Experience working in health care or with or for a large publicly-traded company

  • Ability to work with and interact with multiple executive and business teams

  • Ability to work as part of a cross-functional team within integrated, national and Communications teams

  • Experience managing consultants and agencies

  • Basic understanding of federal and state regulatory environment

  • Must be able to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously

  • Computer literacy (Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

  • Ability to travel (domestically) as required

  • Undergraduate degree

  • Healthcare experience
