Release Train Engineer - Indianapolis, MN

A Release Train Engineer is a servant leader and coach for the Agile Release Train (ART), comprising of four or more agile teams. The RTE’s major responsibilities are to facilitate the ART events and processes and assist the teams in delivering value. RTEs communicate with stakeholders, escalate impediments, help manage risk, and drive relentless improvement.  The RTE is responsible for partnering with the Program Manager, Solution Architect and others regarding the planning, sizing and prioritization of the program backlog.


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Manage and optimize the flow of value through the program using various tools, such as the Program and Solution Kanbans and other information radiators.
  • Establish and communicate the annual calendars for Iterations and Program Increments (PIs)
  • Facilitate PI Planning readiness by fostering the preparation of Vision and Backlogs, and through Pre- and Post-PI Planning meeting
  •  Facilitate the PI planning event Summarize Team PI Objectives into Program PI Objectives (the RTE) and publish them for visibility and transparency
  • Summarize program PI objectives into Solution PI Objectives and publish them for visibility and transparency
  • Assist tracking the execution of features and capabilities (see Metrics)
  • Facilitate periodic synchronization meetings, including the ART sync at the Program Level and the value stream sync for Solution Trains
  • Assist with economic decision-making by facilitating feature and capability estimation by teams and the roll-up to Epics, where necessary
  • Coach leaders, teams, and Scrum Masters in Lean-Agile practices and mindsets Help manage risks and dependencies
  • Escalate and track impediments Provide input on resourcing to address critical bottleneck
  •  Encourage collaboration between teams and System and Solution Architects/Engineering Work with Product and Solution Management, Product Owners, and other stakeholders to help ensure strategy and execution alignment Improve the flow of value through value streams using the Continuous Delivery Pipeline and DevOps 
  • Help drive the Lean User Experience (UX) innovation cycle Report status to Lean Portfolio Management (LPM) and support related activities
  • Understand and operate within Lean Budgets Facilitate System Demos and Solution Demos
  • Drive relentless improvement via Inspect and Adapt workshops; assess the agility level of the ART and Solution Train and help them improve
  • Foster Communities of Practice and the use of engineering and Built-In Quality practices

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience

  • 8+ years of IT experience

  • 4+ years of experience as a Scrum Master working on large scale, multiple Scrum team projects

  • 2+ years working with distributed teams including experience with international teams

  • Experience acting as a Scrum Master for multiple scrum teams

  • Understanding of the fundamentals of iterative development

  • Understand basic fundamentals of software development processes and procedures

  • Understanding of backlog tracking, burndown metrics, velocity, and task definition

  • Understanding of incremental delivery and the value of metrics

  • Excellent English communication skills in written and spoken form


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Rally

  • CSM, CSPO or other Agile based certifications

  • Experience with SAFe or other scaled agile programs

  • Experience with Kanban and other Agile methodologies

  • “ Traditional” Project Management experience

  • Understanding of other processes and methodologies and can speak intelligently about them and leverage other techniques to provide value to a team/enterprise 

  • Understanding of the value of commitments to delivery made by a development team 

  • Familiarity with common Agile practices, service-oriented environments, and better development practices 

  • Participation in industry agile communities

  • Graduate Degree
