The Senior Cost Accounting Analyst is responsible for serving as a lead in departmental services / activities to departmental customers (internal & external). This position is accountable for providing direction and analysis including recommendations when appropriate for all assigned requests/projects and is responsible for serving as a mentor/resource for fellow analysts within the Finance Department as well as lead project/initiatives within the department. This position is expected to provide input on departmental operations as well as identify potential areas for streamlining processes to improve overall operations. The Sr. Cost Accounting Analyst is responsible for maintaining the integrity and accuracy of all cost accounting, data & information/reports developed. This position is responsible for accurate and timely reporting of quarterly costing on a department and system level. The Sr. Cost Accounting Analyst serves as a liaison between Finance and its customers to ensure accurate and effective application of cost accounting information.

Job Description Details:


  • Identifies expense errors in general accounting ledger and coordinates with the Accounting department to make necessary corrections.
  • Maintains and updates cost accounting allocations, reclassification rules and cost category assignments.
  • Conducts regular audits of financial information to ensure all processes are functioning as intended.
  • Performs RVU development for services provided in patient care areas to ensure the proper allocation of resources for costing processes and standardization of RVUs across the organization.
  • Researches and interprets complex information requests and makes recommendations for improvement by providing detailed analytics when appropriate to guide critical decision making.
  • Performs various analyses, developing correlations between various activity measures, cost/revenue and productivity indicators.
  • Development of performance projections and proforma financial analysis for new projects, major capital expenditures, or proposed changes in hospital operations.
  • Models various operational strategies and provides recommendations and projected results for all possible scenarios.
  • Provides proactive analysis aimed at improving financial performance throughout the healthcare system by anticipating future trends, threats, and opportunities affecting financial results of the organization.
  • Performs all assigned month-end closing and annual audit responsibilities with a high level of accuracy and minimal supervision in accordance with the established department close process schedule including:
  • Leads departmental efforts to create and organize policy and procedure documentation.
  • Assists in the streamlining of all routine activities, maximizing the department’s availability to provide critical information and analysis.
  • Identifies and initiates process and service improvements with the support of management.
  • Oversees the system table maintenance for applicable systems as assigned, in cooperation with their respective Director/Manager and educates all affected associates of any changes to system tables.
  • All other duties as assigned.


  • Education: Bachelor degree in Business, Accounting, Finance or related field is required or equivalent combination of related education and experience in lieu of a degree (minimum 8 years related work experience). MBA/MHA preferred.
  • Experience: Three to four years of progressively challenging experience in finance setting (Health Care setting preferred) with experience in one or more of the following areas: Accounting, Budgeting, Cost Accounting, Decision Support or Governmental & Managed Care Reimbursement.
  • Effective Communication Skills; able to translate technical financial terminology into terms understandable to leadership, associates, and external customers.
  • Ability to perform detailed financial analysis while maintaining a strategic perspective.
  • Thorough understanding of cost accounting, general ledger, decision support applications, system interfacing and database design/structure including relational and multi-dimensional database structures.
  • Proficiency in Business Objects or other SQL report writing tools preferred but not required.
  • Strong understanding of revenue cycle process including third-party reimbursement, governmental reimbursement and general patient accounting processes and transaction flow; Strong understanding of basic healthcare claims coding concepts including CPT/HCPCS, APC, MS-DRG, DRG and ICD-9 Diagnosis & Procedure codes
  • Demonstrates strong project management skills with proven success at managing large-scale projects through to completion with limited supervision in required, tightened time-frames while maintaining a strategic perspective.
  • Maintains a thorough understanding of external, regulatory, payor and other forces impacting health care financial operations
  • Solid understanding of basic cost accounting and charge master principals and have the ability to incorporate these concepts in reporting as needed.
