Senior Data Scientist - Twin Cities, MN or Telecommute

UnitedHealthcare is looking for a Senior Data Scientist to become a key member of a small but growing cross functional team that includes actuaries, programmers, economists, and data scientists. This role will work to expand on a successful pilot program that uses algorithms to aid in the optimization of healthcare spending. You will have the opportunity to join a small and dynamic team that has been adding substantial value to both the organization and to the broader healthcare system.

 

In this position, you will be advocating the power of data science concepts and working with cross-functional teams to create actionable insight across core business lines.  You will identify relevant skill and knowledge gaps needed to solve business problems and will develop training programs to close these gaps while providing hands on experience solving major healthcare problems.

 

We are looking for someone who is passionate about asking and answering questions through the use of large structured and unstructured data.  It is critical to have exceptional communication skills and the ability to make complex concepts simple and easy to understand.

 

You’ll enjoy the flexibility to telecommute* from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Be at the forefront of algorithm design and predictive modeling/machine learning development and testing

  • Conduct training and educational programs in data science

  • Document findings, including assumptions and validation work in a clear structured manner

  • Summarize and present findings; adjust the content and level of detail to appropriate level of the audience

  • Develop deep understanding for how data can be used to solve relevant business problems

  • Help expand/contribute to team’s collective predictive modeling/advanced analytics knowledge base

  • Translate business problems from various stakeholders into analytic processes

  • Self-motivating, problem solver, teacher, flexible and adaptable

  • Present analyses, findings, and recommendations to a broader audience including senior leaders

 


Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in quantitative field, computer science, statistics, applied mathematics, or actuarial science

  • 3+ years of experience in statistical analysis, quantitative analytics, and/or forecasting/predicting analytics

  • 2+ years of experience with R or Python

  • 2+ years of experience in SAS

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with business intelligence tools such as Tableau 

  • Experience with healthcare data

  • Expertise in Microsoft Excel

  • Ability to recognize technical and analytical problems and solution with minimal supervision

  • Effective in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
