Senior Patent Engineer – Telecommute

We seek a highly experienced technical professional with strong record of invention accomplishment to guide the UHG inventor population to meet corporate intellectual property goals.  As the Senior Patent Engineer for Optum, you will join our Advanced Technology Collaborative, and work across all UHG entities to identify strategically important inventions, guide innovators to successful disclosure submission, and serve as primary invention mentor to UHG’s 270,000+ employees.  You will interact with the company’s most accomplished innovators, and quickly recognize ideas where protection might be warranted, guide those employees through the necessary steps, identify and remove roadblocks to inventive success, and otherwise take responsibility for development of UHG’s patent portfolio.  You’re a proven self-starter, familiar with emerging technologies and the inventive process, and passionate about the intellectual and business processes surrounding innovation protection.
 
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Mentor aspiring inventors and local mentoring teams seeking information on the invention process.
  • Mentor inventors’ pre- and post-disclosure submission to improve success rates at the Patent Review Boards (PRBs).
  • Mentor inventors whose inventions have been deferred and in need of additional clarification or detail.
  • Develop collateral to broadly help inventors find success.  Such collateral may include, but is not limited to, sample disclosures, white papers, and other inventor communications.
  • Serve as a guiding resource across PRBs, including both macro-level management processes and performance against targeted objectives.  This may include
    • Ensuring adequate pipeline management and disclosure advancement.
    • Work with PRB chairs  to ensure sufficient balance of skill, organization, and geographical representation.
    • Ensuring positive and effective PRB operation to get necessary business results.
    • Recognize and manage macro-level Patent Review Board needs.
  • Interview Key Innovators, to recognize potentially patentable ideas where they exist, and suggest and guide disclosure submission where appropriate.
  • Broadly advance inventor education efforts, as needed.
  • Advance internal communications efforts, designed to highlight and celebrate successful UHG inventors.
  • Identify new opportunities for program linkages, including opportunities for top-down patent identification, grass-roots education and collateral dissemination, and other systemic publicization of IP needs.
  • Assist in invention-related budgeting efforts as required, including funding models, sources, and expenditure specifics.
  • Stay abreast of leading-edge technologies and healthcare market trends, specifically in areas related to cloud-enabled development, AI/ML, Cybersecurity, IoT, immersive virtual experiences, block chain, genomics, and big data technologies.
  • Motivate technical professionals—across a variety of job roles, locations, and areas of expertise—to contribute to UHG’s patent portfolio.
  • Work closely with IP Legal, business, and technology leaders to ensure clear communications on expectations, needs, and next steps for inventive activity.

Required Qualifications:
  • 10+ years of technology experience, either as developer, architect, and/or technical sales roles.
  • Highly experienced inventor, with 100+ filed US patent applications.
  • Demonstrated experience mentoring inventors and/or serving as part of Patent Review Boards.
  • Inventive experience in the post-Alice environment.
  • High-level familiarity with multiple emerging technologies, e.g., machine learning and blockchain concepts.
  • Ability to effectively deal with moderate levels of ambiguity – can effectively cope with change, can shift gears comfortably, and can make day-to-day decisions based on long-term strategic needs.
  • Experience leading globally distributed resources, and working across cultural boundaries.
  • Able to articulate and champion decisions in front of executive management, with effective formal presentation and facilitation skills.
  • Highly collaborative individual with ability to influence others and build strong stakeholder relationships internally.
  • BA/BS in engineering, computer science, or healthcare-related field.
  • Demonstrated success working remotely, without close oversight.
 
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Named inventor on 100+ issued US patents.
  • Broad IP Strategy experience and exposure.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience, with a history of budgetary responsibilities and/or personnel management.
  • Previous healthcare market experience.
